BOOKS

by James Clear

I purchased this book on Audible after a recommendation from a friend who was a professor in the leadership institute at our local university.  From the first chapter, I was hooked.  It breaks down the science of habits and gives practical ways to create new habits in our lives.  It is an interesting easy read with the potential to give the reader actionable ways to make life changes.  I ended up purchasing a print copy to serve as a reference guide.  This book would be helpful to caregivers who are looking to establish new habits as our days work around unpredictable challenges. My son, who is not a reader by any stretch, came home from college and actually recommended this very book as something which had been impactful to him. That, my friends, is the highest recommendation of any!

I watched a clip (click here) of the owner and creator of the Savannah Bananas, Jesse Cole,  meeting and thanking the author of this book, Hal Elrod.  The SAVERS technique from the Miracle Morning book was instrumental in the success of Cole launching his baseball franchise.  Google “Savannah Bananas” to witness the understandable obsession fans have with this baseball team.  Needless to say, based on that clip, I downloaded the book on Audible.  If you are looking for a way to accomplish goals while bringing balance into your unpredictable life as a caregiver, start here.  Hal teaches his readers an easy streamlined way to start the day based on the most powerful methods used by successful people.  He even has an app to support your practice.

Being upset, annoyed or frustrated with the actions of other people is part of the human experience.  For those of us who are caregivers, we certainly find ourselves going down that same rabbit hole when advocating for our loved one or dealing with opinions, advice, or criticisms from those who have no clue what our daily lives are like.  Get this in the audio version…Mel reads it herself and is quite entertaining.  The advice is simple but profound.

This is the first book I read in the early stages of my husband’s dementia.  Like the name says, it’s full of practical advice and tips.  I followed the author’s  instructions on making a caregiver notebook and I carry that binder with me to all Wayne’s appointments.  I’ve even had a doctor comment to me how impressed he was with all the organization.  It’s a quick read and definitely one to read in the early stages of your caregiving.
